The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are the most complex joints in the body. Pain in these joints is very often caused from a low resting tongue posture. The tongue is designed to rest in the palate and helps to stabilize the jaw. When it doesn’t, the jaw is unsupported and often leads to pain in the TMJ joints and headaches. If the tongue rest posture is not corrected through myofunctional therapy, these issues often worsen over time and can become debilitating.
Chronic headaches are often associated with TMJ problems due to the added stress and tension on the 68 muscles that connect the 2 joints to the rest of the body.
Open mouth resting posture and tongue-ties are common culprits for TMJ problems. Both of which can be helped by myofunctional therapy.
